Abstract

795,933. Sparking-plugs. JET IGNITION CO., Inc. Oct. 10, 1955 [Oct. 8, 1954], No. 28859/55. Class 7(4) In a sparking-plug of the type comprising an ignition chamber 14 in the end of which is disposed an insert 19 having helical passages establishing communication with a cylinder whereby combustible mixture entering the chamber during the compression stroke is caused to swirl and after ignition re-enters and after ignition re-enters the cylinder to ignite the main charge, the insert 19 is. cylindrical and has helical grooves 21 opening peripherally and also at the opposite end faces of the insert, a constriction of the communication between the cylinder and passages formed between the grooves and the inner wall of the plug body 12 being provided by an inclined shoulder 22 terminating in a small-diameter passage 23. As shown, a bevelled portion 24 of the insert seats on the shoulder 22; in a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the insert instead of being bevelled, is cylindrical throughout its length and terminates where the shoulder 22 commences. Electrodes 17, 18 are carried by an insulator 11 and insert 19 respectively.
