Abstract

795,659. Chain hoists. SMITH, G. S. Jan. 3, 1955 [Oct. 13, 1953; Nov. 17, 1953], Nos. 22297/53 and 31798/53. Class 78 (5). Load pulley 1A is driven by reciprocating handle 9A, the handle being furnished with two pawls which co-operate respectively with ratchets 7B and 7. When the load is to be raised, ratchet 7B is driven by the handle through its respective pawl, the ratchet being splined on to shaft 2 so that pulley 1A is thus directly driven and the load raised. The tendency of the load to fall is prevented by splines 53 formed in housing 1, backward rotation of the pulley causing ratchet 7 to screw itself along shaft 2 till plate 5 is gripped between ratchet 7 and backplate 3 fixed to shaft 2, the plate 5 having slots 2 engaging in the splines 6 of casing 1. When the load is to be lowered, ratchet 7 is driven by the handle through the other pawl so that ratchet 7 is screwed leftwards along shaft 2 to free plate 5 from splines 6, the alternate reciprocating strokes of the handle permitting the fall of the load in steps, each step terminating when the load has screwed the ratchet 7 till plate 5 is fixed by its splines. The back plate 3, alternatively, may be appropriately splined or screwed on to shaft 2. Handwheel 2C serves to free the clutch to permit freewheeling of the chain.
