Abstract

795,622. Endless-belt conveyers. SOC. POUR L'ETUDE DES CONVOYEURS S.E.C. Oct. 17, 1955 [Oct. 18, 1954; Dec. 24, 1954; Sept. 27, 1955], No. 29498/55. Class 78 (1). In a belt conveyer of the kind in which the belt is supported on its working run by endless underlying carrying elements some or all of which are driven, the belt is provided on its underside with grooves which locate the carrying elements, at least one groove being directly below at least part of the load. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, the grooves 8 are located in the central portion of a troughed belt 5 the side portions of which rest on idler rollers 3. The carrying elements 6 are of trapezoidal section, reinforced by a cable 7, and are guided at intervals between flanges 10 on idler rollers 9. On the idle run of the conveyer the belt rests on idler rollers 13, Fig. 6, and the elements 6, which lie above the belt on the idle run, are engaged at intervals by grooved rollers 11 to maintain the belt and cables central. At any part of the working run where the elements 6 might jump out from between the flanges 10 of a roller 9, the belt may be separated from the cables and passed over rollers 14, Fig. 9, while the cables are gripped between an upper plain roller 13 and a lower grooved roller 11. Grooves may be provided in the side portions of the belt in addition to those in the central portion to engage further carrying elements 6 which may or may not be driven. Each terminal station consists of pulleys 15, Fig. 13, to engage the elements 6, and may include drums 17 having annular protuberances 18 to engage the side portions of the belt. In another embodiment, Fig. 14, the belt 25, which includes a replaceable wearing sole 29, has pairs of ribs 30 for engaging central driving cables 26 and single ribs 31 for engaging side cables 26. The face of ribs 31 which engages the cables is concave to fit the cable. The grooves formed between the pairs of ribs 30 are also shaped to fit the cables closely. The assembly runs on central rollers 27 and side rollers 28. The rollers 27 have pairs of flanges to receive the pairs of ribs 30, while the rollers 28 have flanges of which the side which engages the cable 26 is toroidal, the radius of the curved surface so formed being greater than that of the cable 26. Where it is necessary to have an unusually long span between two adjacent sets of belt-supporting rollers extra cables of larger section may be arranged to travel between the main cables over such a span, while in a long conveyer a number of sets of endless cables may be arranged in series and either equipped with separate driving mechanisms or a drive transmitted from one to the other. The belt is preferably separated from the cables at the terminal stations and is carried on a series of loose pulleys 76, Fig. 32, on a driving shaft 74 which drives the cables 78 through pulleys 75 disposed between the pulleys 76 and secured to the shaft 74. The cables may alternatively be driven by an endless driving belt 81, Fig. 33, which is reinforced by internal endless cables and is provided with grooves on its upper face to receive the cables, and also with trapezoidal ribs on its underface to engage grooved driving drums 82, 83. Instead of longitudinal ribs, the underside of the belt may be provided with transverse ribs of sawtooth crosssection to engage complementary transverse grooves on the driving drums. Various arrangements of endless carrying elements are also shown for use at locations where the belt changes from horizontal to inclined stretches, and for use in a tripper assembly.
