Abstract

795,596. Producing nuclear reactions. VOLOCHINE, T. Aug. 1, 1956 [Aug. 2, 1955], No. 23725/56. Class 39(4). Nuclear reactions are promoted by polarizing those particles which are participating in the reaction. Neutrons from a beryllium radium source 1 are moderated by a paraffin wax block 4 and polarized in a magnetic field produced by windings 12 so that the probability of a reaction (H + n#D) with a polarized supply of protons from 5 is increased. The particles are polarized so that the sum of the spins and /or magnetic moments shall equal that of the spins and/or moments of the nucleus to be formed. Other reactions, such as (D + H#<SP>3</SP>He), D + n#T) and (<SP>6</SP>Li + H#<SP>4</SP>He + <SP>3</SP>He) are described. The neutron source may be a mixture of Be with Po or an artificial radioactive element and the neutrons may be retarded by liquid helium or by heavy water. Heat generated in the reaction is removed by a coolant at 7.
