Abstract

795,085. Wire tensioning means. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 18, 1956 [May 19, 1955], No. 15565/56. Class 120(2) Tensioning apparatus for tensioning wire etc. comprises a carrier for the wire or the like, the carrier including a part made of metal and being free to rotate under the action of the wire, one or more magnets with their pole pieces adjacent the metallic part of the carrier and means for rotating the magnets at a speed much higher than that of the carrier and in a direction opposite to that of the carrier. As shown the invention is applied to apparatus for winding wire on to planar grid supports. The wire is carried by a reel 2 mounted on a lightweight metal drum 12 carried by a shaft 13 free to rotate in bearings 14. A bar magnet 15 is mounted within the drum 12 and is rotated by electric motor 17 through shaft 16. Rotation of the magnet at high speed compared with that of the reel 2 causes a substantially constant torque to act upon the drum 12 and thus a substantially constant tension in the wire. In a second embodiment, the reel is mounted on a disc rotatably mounted on the shaft of the motor which shaft carries magnets on both sides of the disc. Instead of the reel being mounted on the drum it can be mounted separately and the , wire fed around the drum.
