793,621. Grinding helical cutting edges. SCHUTTE, A. H., COMMER, G., WELCKER, L., THEN, E. and PECHMANN, E. F. Von. [trading as SCHUTTE, A. H. [Firm of]]. July 6, 1954 [July 9, 1953], No. 19791/54. Class 60. A method of gririding helical cutting edges on tools, more particularly milling cutters, using a swivelling grinding head having a cup wheel, is characterized in that the grinding wheel spindle is swung by the amount of the desired angle of clearance about an axis which lies outside the grinding wheel frontal surface and in a plane parallel to a line generating the tool surface by rotation, the axis in turn being adjusted in the said plane by the amount of the helix angle of the tool. The spindle 18 of the cup grinding wheel 51 rotates in a sleeve 17 supported by cross pins 19 in a ring 22 mounted in a housing 20. The ring 22 is rotatably adjusted to the helical angle of the tool, a scale 24 being provided for this purpose. The sleeve 17 is adjusted about the pins 19 to the clearance angle, a scale 25 being provided for this purpose. The spindle 18 is driven by a motor 26 supported by a bracket 27 on the sleeve 17 ; a pin 28 on the housing 20 engages in a slot in the bracket 27. In a modification the motor is mounted by cross pins in the ring 22 and the grinding wheel is mounted on the motor shaft.
