[Class 60.] Milling cutters, sharpening.-A machine for grinding milling cutters consisting of two parts having helical cutting teeth of opposite hand, and adapted to be assembled in contact and in axial alignment, is provided with means whereby the teeth of both parts are ground to the same diameter and with the same clearance angle. The machine consists of a standard 1 upon which is mounted a rotatable head 2 carrying a grinding wheel 3 driven by an electric motor 5. Adjustable on the standard is a bracket 7 carrying a slide 10 having its top in the form of a circular plate upon which are adjustably mounted a plate 18 and a bearing 16 carrying an arbor 17 which supports the cutter 20 to be ground. On the plate 18 is a slide 23 movable by a screw 26, and on the slide is a guide 24 on which is adjustable vertically, by a screw 22, a slide 25. The slide 25 carries an abutment 19 having thereon two bearing surfaces 28, 29 set to an angle corresponding td the pitch angle of the teeth of a right-handed and a left-handed cutter respectively, and in grinding the tooth, this rests on the respective bearing surface whilst the cutter is partially rotated on, and moved along the arbor 17, the height of the bearing surface determining the angle of clearance of the tooth. The width of the bearing surfaces exceeds that of, and is arranged symmetrically with respect to the grinding-face of the wheel 3, and when changing over from one cutter to the other, the slide 23 is moved to bring the other bearing surface into position, the correct positioning being determined by the contact of screws 30, 31 on the slide with a stop 27. In a modification, the bearing surfaces are formed on a pivoted member carried by the slide, and adapted to be thrown over 180‹ and located by a stop pin for grinding both cutters. The flanks of the teeth of the cutters are ground by a second grinding- wheel 4, Fig. 10, carried by the head 2, stops 36, 37 being provided against which the flanks bear during grinding. The grinding-wheel 3 may be trued by a diamond tool mounted in a hole 38 in the abutment 19.
