Abstract

793,276. Applying screw caps to containers. HOFLIGER, O., and KARG, R., [trading as HOFLIGER & KARG.]. Jan. 11, 1956 [Jan. 12, 1955], No. 959/56. Class 125(2). In apparatus for applying screw caps to containers in which pivoted, continuously rotating grippers are swung in to grip the cap, lowered to apply it and then swung out to release the cap and returned to their initial position, the caps are rotated at the same speed as the grippers before being gripped thereby to eliminate relative peripheral motion during the gripping and thus to avoid cap damage and variations in load on the drive. As shown in Fig. 1, a tube 6, mounted in a support bracket 1, is continuously rotated by a belt 12 and contains a stack of screw-caps 5 which are retained by resilient fingers 43 hooking under the lowest cap. A sleeve 18 is slidably mounted on tube 6 and is rotated through a key 19 by the tube. Depending from it are two brackets 29 each provided with a rotatable shaft 32 fitted with an arm 33 carrying a cap gripper 38 and with a second arm 30 coupled to the armature of a solenoid 35. Sleeve 18 is flanged at 22, 23 and can be raised and lowered by rollers 25 carried on a forked lever 27. In operation, solenoids 35 are energized through slip rings 50 and contacts 49 to cause grippers 38 to grip the lowest cap while extending through slots 41 in tube 6. Lever 27 then lowers sleeve 18 so that grippers 38 withdraw the lowest cap past fingers 43 and apply it to the container. Contacts 49 are then removed from rings 50 by suitable means so that springs 46 retract the grippers whereupon fork 27 lifts the sleeve 18 again. Solenoids 35 are again energized to swing the grippers in to grip the next cap. In a modified form, a cam-operated forked lever first swings the grippers in to grip the cap and then lowers the sleeve 18 to apply the cap to the container. Thereupon, the forked lever first swings the grippers outwards and then raises the sleeve to its original position.
