Abstract

A solution for the immersion brass finishing of zinc-alloy die-castings comprises copper cyanide, an alkali-metal cyanide, zinc cyanide and ammonia. If the reagents contain iron as an impurity, an addition of 1-5 gm. per litre of potassium sodium tartrate should be added. Prior to immersion the castings may have an activating dip in 1 per cent or 5 per cent by volume solution of sulphuric acid and rinsed in cold water. After brass finishing the work is alternately dipped in cold running water and in a nearly boiling saturated solution of hydrogen potassium tartrate and washed; or washed in cold running water and dried with a warm air blast. Nickel may then be electrodeposited prior to which, after brass finishing, it is just cold washed, dipped for 1-2 seconds in a 2 per cent by volume H2SO4 solution and rinsed in running cold water. The electrolytic solution should have a pH of 5.6.
