Abstract

792,775. Fuel injectors. SATZGER E. April 25, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 11840/55. Class 7(3) In a fuel injection device arranged to produce preliminary and main injections, the main injection is initiated by the pressure in the combustion space. In Fig. 1 the fuel is supplied to an injection space 5 past a non-return valve 4 and preliminary injection occurs through a fine orifice 6, the main injection orifice 8 being closed by a spring loaded valve 9 which is provided with a recess 12 on which acts the pressure in the combustion space transmitted through the orifice 8. At a predetermined combustion space pressure the valve 9 is lifted off its seat and the main injection through orifice 8 takes place, the valve 9 being maintained, raised for the remainder of the injection cycle by the pressure in chamber 5 acting upon the end of the valve. In a modification the valve 9 is provided with an annular step on which the pressure in space 5, which increases with engine speed, acts to assist the valve 9 to open and to cause the valve 9 to open at a lower combustion space pressure with increasing speed; alternatively the pressure in space 5 may be arranged to assist the spring 11 in loading the valve 9, whereby the valve 9 opens at a higher combustion space pressure with increasing engine speed. The valve 4 is arranged so that on closing it reduces the pressure in the space 5 and prevents drip. In Fig. 5 the preliminary injection takes place through passages 18, 19, in the valve 9<SP>111</SP> which directs the preliminary jet through the main injection orifice 8. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the non-return valve 4 is replaced by a spring-loaded valve 21, concentric with the main valve 9<SP>1v</SP>, which is lifted by fuel pressure before the valve 9<SP>1v</SP> is opened and permits the fuel to reach the preliminary orifice 6. The valve 21 may be arranged to contact a collar 20 on the valve 9<SP>1v</SP> to assist opening of the latter; alternatively the loading spring of the valve 9<SP>1v</SP> may be arranged inside the valve 21 so that the force of the loading spring is reduced as the valve 21 opens, the amount of the reduction varying with the varying lift of the valve 21 at varying engine speed.
