To increase the patterning possibilities of a circular superposed cylinder machine, the bottom sliders 4 are each provided with a nose 19 above the knitting butt 9 for engagement with a selector 16 of pattern cylinder 15, Fig. 6. Some of the transfer butts 10 of the bottom sliders are long and others are short, being interspersed according to patterning requirements. During patterning the welt cam 11 is withdrawn and a cam 13 is inserted to engage the long transfer butts and to raise the corresponding needles to clearing height. The knitting butts 9 of the other sliders, the transfer butts of which miss cam 13, pass into the welt track 12 and the noses 19 of selected sliders are engaged by selector jacks 16 which elevate them to a position in which the knitting butts 9 come into engagement with a cam 20 whereby the transfer butts 10 are brought into engagement with a transfer cam 21 thereby enabling transfer of the corresponding needles to the top cylinder to be effected and purl stitches to be subsequently formed. The long transfer butt sliders which have been raised by cam 13 to clearing height may have their knitting butts 9 engaged by selector jacks 16 of the pattern cylinder and accordingly raised to a height whereby the knitting butts 9 engage a transfer cam 22 to effect transfer of the needles. The sliders whose knitting butts pass into track 12 and are not selected by the pattern cylinder may remain at a non-knitting level or may be raised to a tucking or clearing height by a movable cam 24. During welt formation the cams 11, 13 and 24 are withdrawn.
