Abstract

792,029. Hose couplings. WEATHERHEAD CO. April 9, 1956 [April 14, 1955], No. 10727/56. Class 99(1). A hose end fitting comprises an insert 16 press fitted or brazed in a counterbore in a body member 11 and a sleeve 12 which is contracted on to the hose 22 fitted over the insert 16, a flange 24 on the sleeve being forced into a reentrant groove 18 in the body member 11 during the contraction to lock the sleeve to the body member. The groove 18 is provided with an inclined wall 19 against which the flange 24 abuts, the forces set up when the sleeve 12 is forced through a contracting die 25 causing the the flange to be upset to fill the groove 18. The interior of the sleeve 12 is threaded to distort the hose reinforcing material after contraction ; if the reinforcing material is metallic, the thread is a sharp thread to cut through the hose material to the reinforcing material but if the reinforcing material is a textile, such as cotton braiding, the thread is blunted or a buttress thread is employed to avoid cutting the reinforcing layer. The outer surface of the insert 16 is ridged to grip the hose.
