Abstract
791,902. Linear dimension gauges. HEIDENHAIN, J., [trading as WENCZLER & HEIDENHAIN]. Sept. 9, 1954, No. 26181/54. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A measuring means for determining the position of a body in relation to a graduated scale is characterized by graduations formed by variations in magnetic field along the scale and a scanning member movable relative to the scale and transmitting signals in response to the magnetic conditions prevailing in a particular position along the scale, the scanning member being attached to the body. In some embodiments, a magnetic head 3 scans a scale 1 having magnetic markings corresponding to the graduations (Fig. 1). The markings may be inserts of magnetic in non-magnetic material or vice versa. Two series of graduations may be arranged in vernier relation. The graduations may be arranged to vary in their magnetic effect so that the signals produced differ according to the position of the body. A magnetic tape may be used to enable vocal announcements of the body's position to be made. A further alternative consists in using electrical impulse counters to determine the position. The graduations may be directionally arranged for scanning by a series of magnetic heads having gaps positioned to respond to particular graduations (Fig. 5). The effective scale length may be increased by arranging it as a helix on a rotating cylinder, the magnetic head traversing the cylinder longitudinally. If the speed of the traverse of the head relative to the graduations is not high enough to produce the necessary variations of potential, the head may be oscillated or comprise an oscillating portion. Alternatively it may carry a coil through which an alternating current is passed. The scanning means may comprise deflector magnets traversing the graduations and so positioning the beam, or beams of a cathode-ray tube on one or more of its output electrodes as to produce a selective signal (Figs. 11, 13). A series of gaps in one or more deflector magnets may respond to variously arranged graduations (e.g. Fig. 20). Specification 607,702, [Group XXII], is referred to.
