Abstract

791,231. Barrels for treating articles electrolytically. ALKAN, Ltd., M. L., and MORLEY, C. W. J. July 6, 1954 [July 6, 1953], No. 18701/53. Class 41. An apparatus treating articles o by electrolysis, e.g. electroplating or electrolytic cleaning, comprises a barrel c having an aperture extending longitudinally and an internally projecting shelf d covering the aperture, means for conducting electric current to and from electrolyte in which the barrel c is substantially submerged by way of the articles, means for rotating the barrel clockwise or anticlockwise, and electrodes l, Fig. 10, conforming in shape to the exterior of the barrel c and located near to the barrel. The barrel c rotates in bearings c1 in a tank b which is divided by a partition into a compartment a for electrolyte and a compartment j for a motor which drives the barrel c through a belt or chain i. A lever g is operated to stop the barrel c, a lever h ensuring that rotation of the barrel c is impossible unless a basket e is in position to receive discharged articles. Flexible leads x entering at each end of the barrel c connect articles in the barrel to a current supply the other terminal of which is connected to one or more external electrodes l mounted near the outer surface of the barrel, or to a part-cylindrical electrode in the barrel.
