Abstract

Fatty acid residues, particularly stearine pitch, are stabilized by sulphurizing them with sulphur at an elevated temperature, e.g. 200-300 DEG C., in the presence of a diluent, which is preferably a phenol extract from a phenol extraction process for lubricating oils. The stabilized residues may then be mixed with bitumen and contacted with a solution of sodium hydroxide to emulsify the bitumen. Such emulsions may be employed in the building and repairing of roads, and in the waterproofing of felt and containers.ALSO:Fatty acid residues, particularly stearine pitch, are stabilized by sulphurizing them with sulphur at an elevated temperature, e.g., 200 DEG -300 DEG C., in the presence of a diluent, which is preferably a phenol extract from a phenol extraction process for lubricating oils.
