Abstract

Bituminous emulsions are obtained by treating a bituminous composition comprising bitumen and tall pitch (the distillation residue from crude liquid resin) of a softening point of at least 25 DEG C, with dilute alkali solution. The tall pitch serves as the main emulsifying agent. Liquid resin may also be present in the emulsion.ALSO:A bituminous composition comprises a bitumen of poor emulsibility with a minor amount of tall pitch of a softening point of at least 25 DEG C. The tall pitch is the distillation residue of crude liquid rosin (tall oil) and is obtained by steam distillation under reduced pressure. 2 to 10 per cent by weight of tall pitch is present, and the composition is emulsified with dilute alkali solution which may also include liquid rosin. Bitumens which may be used include coal tars, cracking tars, and tars from oils, fats, lignite and peat, and oxidised bitumen and coal tar.
