Abstract

790,692. Measuring torque electrically. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 3, 1956 [May 12, 1955], No. 13733/55. Class 40 (1). The torque transmitted by a shaft 1 (Fig. 3) to a colinear shaft 2 is proportional to the twist of a torsion member 3 connecting the two shafts, and is measured by the change in capacity between an internally toothed drum electrode 4 (Fig. 2) on shaft 1 and an externallytoothed drum electrode 7 on shaft 2. The measuring circuit (Fig. 4) comprises the capacitance TV between electrodes 4, 7 in series with two fixed capacitors TF1, TF2 comprising moving cylindrical electrodes 15, 17 mechanically and electrically united to drum electrodes 4, 7 respectively associated with fixed cylindrical electrodes 16, 18 respectively, the complete series capacity arrangement T for using one arm of a bridge, the adjacent arm being a fixed capacitor K, and the balancing arms being a potentiometer adjustable by a knob 20 (Fig. 3). The bridge unbalance signal is indicative of the twist of member 3, and hence of the torque being transmitted.
