Abstract

1,068,917. Impedance measuring apparatus. INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Ltd. Jan. is, 1966 [Jan. 25, 1965], No. 3241/65. Heading G1U. In an apparatus for measuring the ratio of two impedances, the impedances 1, 2 are connected in two arms of a bridge circuit, of which one of the other arms includes a current sensitive resistor 6, e.g. a thermistor or varistor, and the other a comparison resistor 7. The output of the bridge 10, 11 is connected via a tuned circuit 12 and an amplifier 5 to the bridge input 3, 4 the arrangement being such that for any given ratio of the impedances 1, 2 a stable oscillatory condition is reached in which the current through the resistor 6 is such as to produce a nearly balanced condition of the bridge. The impedance ratio is then indicated as a function of the amplifier output voltage by a meter 15. As described with reference to Fig. 1, the impedance 2 is fixed, and impedance 1 variable. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown) the two impedances are both variable and comprise a pair of inductances (16, 17) mutually coupled to a movable coil (18) to form a strain gauge. When resistor 6 is a temperature sensitive resistor, resistor 7 may also include a temperature sensitive element to provide compensation.
