Abstract
790,639. Moulding resin-fibre articles. BRISTOL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Jan. 13, 1956 [Feb. 1, 1955], No. 3004/55. Class 87(2). A curved shell is formed by placing layers of fibres, e.g., glass fibres or vegetable or animal fibres, or knitted fabrics between mould parts 20, 26, and then impregnating the fibres with a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, preferably a polyester resin, by applying compressed air to a container 40 to force the resin through an opening in the mould part 26. The resin escapes through pipes 31 to which suction may be applied. At least one side of the mould is made of light permeable material, e.g., glass fibres and resin, and the mould is irradiated, e.g., by bulbs 51, to allow the course of the resin to be followed. To facilitate this the resin may contain fluorescent material. Some of the outlet holes are plugged, the plugged holes being changed during impregnation to alter the flow path of the resin. Alternatively, several inlets may be used or an outlet may be used as an inlet. The progress of the impregnation may also be followed by watching for air bubbles in transparent parts 53 of the pipes 31. The resin may be mixed with an accelerator or hardener or they may be previously incorporated in the fibre. The mould parts may be formed by applying a parting layer, e.g., wax, to a plaster model, Fig. 3, building up layers 18 of woven glass fibre impregnated with polyester resin on the model to the thickness of the desired shell, setting the resin, applying a parting agent to the layer 18, applying a layer 20 of woven glass fibre impregnated with resin, setting the layer, removing the plaster model and applying a similar layer to the other side of the layer 18. The layer 18 is then removed. Strengthening ribs 24 may be provided on the layer 20. Outlet and inlet holes' may be drilled in the layer 20. A boss may be formed in the layer 26 where an inlet is to be formed.
