Abstract

789,830. Engraving. ATTI, R. J. Aug. 12, 1955, No. 23337/55. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XXII] A machine for engraving the concave face 41 of a part-spherical cup, such as a golf ball mould, by a fixed rotary cutting tool 27, has a part-spherical master 43 patterned on its convex face and mounted so that it may be guided relative to a fixed reference point 161 (corresponding to the tool tip), and a work holder 49, 48, 42, mounted on the master and supporting the cun concentrically thereto, and means are provided to adjust the cup so that its pole is off-centre relative to the pole of the master to enable indicia to be cut across the cup pole with comparatively small movements of the master. As shown in Figs. 2 and 5 the part 42 is part-cylindrical with its axis passing through the common centre of the cup and master spheres at right angles to the shaft 50 of the master, and has arcuate ribs 45 engaging channels 47 in the part 48. whereby it may be adjusted to bring the cup pole to a position corresponding to the middle of the eccentric raised or intaglio design 68 on the master; it is there clamped by pins 64 pressed inwards by conical screws 62 (similar clamps hold the cup in the part 42); the part 48 is rotatable about the axis of the shaft 50 to bring the cup pole into the same radial plane as the horizontal centre-line of the design 68, and is then clamped by set screws 61 in the part 49. The horizontal master shaft 50, integral with the latter, is rotatable in a bracket 52 secured to a plate 53 slidable on a fixed platform 15 about a member 54 whose vertical axis passes through 'the common centre of the cup and master spheres. The tool 27 is mounted parallel to, and geared at 23 to, an extension of a shaft 18 having a flywheel 19 connected by a belt 21 to a .source of power (not shown), oil during operation being supplied by conduits 58, 57 and withdrawn from a dish 56 by a conduit 159; the tool bracket 7 is slidable in a slot in the bed 4 and is locked by means 11, 6, 9 in operative position determined by contact of an adjustable screw 13 with a fixed pillar 14; depth of cut is set by rotating a screw having graduations on its head 38 co-operating with an indicator 39, to move a bell-crank lever pivoted at 33, the tool being axially movable in its bearing and rearwardly spring-pressed against a floating plate carried by the transverse arm 31 of the bell-crank lever. The fixed reference point to which the operator relates the various parts of the design 68 may be defined by a stylus 161.
