Abstract

789,784. Exhaust-silencers. SOC. D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS INDUSTRIELLES COMMERCIALES ET IMMOBILIERES INTERTECHNIQUE. April 18. 1956 [April 18, 1955], No. 11817/56. Class 7(2) In a silencer whereiri exhaust gases flow successively through a number of tubes 21, 22 and 23, Fig. 4, and wherein each tube communicates -with the following' tube through an intercommunicating system comprising on the one hand holes 24, 25 in the walls of the tubes and a chamber 19 disposed around these apertured portions of the 'tubes, and on the other hand through a balancing chamber 17 joining the exit end of the tube 24 with the inlet end of the tube 25, the holes and dimensions of the balancing chamber are such that in each system and for one half of the total gas flow the gas pressure losses through the holes and the balancing chamber respectively are equal. As shown, in Figs. 4 and 5, the silencer comprises a casing 11 divided by partitions 13, 14 and 15 into balancing chambers 17, 18 and intercommunication chambers 19', 20, the inlet and discharge tubes 21, 23 being provided with holes 24, 26 to allow gases to flow from the tubes into the chambers 19, 20, and the tube 22 having holes 25 and communicating with both those chambers. Gases flow from the tube 21 into the chamber 17, from the latter to the chamber 18 via the tube 22, and then into the tube 23,to be discharged from the silencer. In a modification, a casing 27, Fig. 7, is provided with balancing chambers 32, 33 which communicate via apertures in partitions 29, 30 with an intermediate chamber enclosing apertured portions of two tubes 35, 36. An exhaust system shown in Fig. 10, includes silencers S<SP>1</SP> and S<SP>2</SP>, as shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 7 respectively, the length r; s, of the exhaust pipe between the silencers being 2.64 times the length p, q of the pipe between the engine and the silencer S<SP>1</SP>.
