Abstract

699,969. Silencers for gaseous currents. KYFFIN, F. H. Jan. 17, 1952 [Jan. 17, 1951], No. 1248/51. Class 7 (ii). A silencer including a tubular casing 20 has an end plate or partition 25 comprising dished parts 38, 39 fitted together peripherally and so shaped that inwardly from the periphery at least one of the parts diverges from the other, each part being. provided with a hole, which may be eccentric to the axis of the silencer, to receive a pipe 27. The parts 38, 39 may be provided with peripheral flanges 40, 41 so that one part fits within the other, and the holes for the pipe 27 may have oppositely-directed flanges 42, 43. There may be an annular space 24 formed between the casing 20 and a perforated tubular member 21, the gases being constrained by a baffle 29 to flow along the space and into the member 21, after which the gases pass through a perforated baffle 30 closing the space 24, and into an expansion chamber 34, and through a perforated pipe 36 surrounded by sound-absorbing material 37 such as glass wool. An expansion chamber 33 is provided between the inlet 27 and the member 21. In modifications, the silencer comprises (a) two members 21 spaced from the end plates 25, 26 of the casing 20 and an intermediate expansion chamber, Fig. 6 (not shown); (b) the arrangement of Fig. 1 having an additional expansion chamber between the outlet of the pipe 36 and the end plate 26, Fig. 9 (not shown); and (c) expansion chambers 33, 34 and a single member 21, Fig. 10 (not shown).
