Abstract

787,869. Woodworking: grinding. HORSTMANN & SHERWEN, Ltd. March 29, 1956 [Aug. 9, 1955], No. 22925/55. Classes 60 and 145. [Also in Group XXII] A machine for sawing, routing, grinding, polishing or drilling comprises a bed 6 attachable to a work bench; a vertical pillar 5, a horizontal beam 7 rotatably adjustable about its longitudinal axis in a bracket 9 which is vertically and rotatably adjustable on the pillar, a carriage 8 keyed to and slidable along the beam and a plate 21 angularly adjustable on the carriage and having a slideway 27 for a carrier 28 on which an electrically-driven tool can be mounted. The bracket 9 comprises a pair of split sockets 10, 11 embracing the pillar and beam and a split collar 14 supports the bracket on the pillar when it is left free for rotation on the pillar. The carriage 8 can be locked in position on the beam by a screw 48 engaging a gib 18 lying under the beam key 19 and the angularly adjustable plate 21 can be locked on the carriage by a conical-headed screw 23 and knurled wheel 25. For feeding the tool slide 28, a lever 33 is pivoted on the plate and has a pin-and-slot connection 34, 35 with the slide but the slide can be locked in any adjusted position by a clamp nut 38 engaging a sector plate 36 in which one side of the slideway 27 is formed. The electrically-driven tool is carried on the slide between a flange formed as a split socket 30 and a gripping screw 31 on a flange 29. A split bracket 40 on the lower part of the pillar has an arm 42 on which a work table 43 is angularly adjustable about a horizontal axis. Graduations and index marks may be provided on the bracket 9, the beam 7 and pillar 5, on the plate 21 and carriage 8 and on the arm 42 and work table 43. The Provisional Specification also describes the carriage 8 as being a U-shaped frame embracing the beam from underneath and having a pair of grooved rollers riding on top of the beam and a single grooved roller below the beam.
