Abstract

787,731. Cutting by spark discharge. SPARCATRON, Ltd. Nov. 11, 1954 [Dec. 31, 1952], No. 146/53. Class 83 (4). In cutting or working electrically conductive material by electric spark discharges produced between a tool electrode 2 and a workpiece 1, a flow of gas or vapour containing solid particles in suspension is maintained in the discharge gap. Preferably, the solid particles are suspended in a liquid which is sprayed or injected into the gas or vapour and the suspension of particles in the liquid may be obtained by a spark discharge process. A piece of silicon 14 immersed in water in a bath 8 is connected to the positive pole of a spark discharge circuit that includes an electrode 13 and a capacitor 12 and is controlled by a float 10 which also maintains the level 9 of the water by operating a valve 11. Spark discharging between the electrode 13 and silicon 14 results in particles of silicon being dispersed in the water which is induced into an injector 4 by compressed air supplied at 5, the mixture of air and water vapour containing suspended particles of silicon being supplied through a conduit 3 and the hollow electrode 2 to the spark gap between the latter and the workpiece 1. The vapour may then be condensed and after filtration returned to the bath 8. Specifications 637,872 and 780,242 are referred to,
