Abstract

786,803. Electrolytic capacitors. WARREN, S. D., and BURKARD, R. F. July 8, 1955, No. 19903/55. Class 37. The electrolyte in an electrolytic capacitor comprises a substantially anhydrous mixture of an insulating organic solvent, preferably a ketone, a weak organic acid such as a phenol or cresol and an alkali metal base such as sodium hydroxide. The percentage of acid to solvent lies in the range 5-80 per cent and the percentage of base to acid lies in the range 0.03- 0.8 per cent. It is stated that under these conditions the capacitor can be made to operate satisfactorily when an alternating voltage applied thereto is biased by a direct voltage of less than the peak alternating voltage. The bias voltage may consequently be derived from a rectifier connected to the A.C. source as shown in Fig. 1 where the capacitor containing the anhydrous electrolyte is connected across the A.C. source 10 and is biased by a direct voltage derived by means of the rectifier 18. As shown in Fig. 3, the capacitor is housed within a metal can 25 to which the bias voltage is applied over the conductor 27 from the rectifier 26 connected to the terminal 28 of the capacitor.
