Abstract

797,310. Electrolytically etching tantalum. BRITISH DIELECTRIC RESEARCH, Ltd. Jan. 18, 1957 [Jan. 19, 1956], No. 1850/56. Class 41. The surface area of a tantalum body for use as an electrolytic capacitor electrode is increased by anodic etching in a solution in an organic solvent of an organohalogen compound which decomposes to form halogen ions when subjected in solution to an electric potential. The organohalogen compound may be trichloracetic acid with or without one or more soluble metallic trichloracetates, which may be formed by addition of compounds such as sodium. hydroxide or carbonate, and may be dissolved in an alcohol, e.g. methanol, together with up to 10 per cent by weight of water.
