Abstract
786,534. Rangefinders. BARR & STROUD, Ltd. May 24, 1956 [June 30, 1955], No. 18913/55. Class 97(1) A coincidence or stereoscopic rangefinder of the self-contained base type utilizing two incoming light beams has in each of the beams a substantially opaque screen having a narrow parallel-sided slot thereon so that when the rangefinder is directed'at the sun to check the infinity adjustment passage of excessive heat to the instrument is prevented and the image of the sun is elongated by diffraction at the edges of the slot. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 the screens 2 are arranged in the incoming beams 4 so that the slots line in the plane of triangulation of the instrument, the slot being so narrow as to produce by diffraction an elongation of the image of the sun as shown at 38 in Fig. 7A which facilitates! testing of the infinity adjustment and minimizes errors in such testing arising from halving errors in the instrument. The screens may be fixed to the windows 3 or pivoted on the outside of the casing to be moved over or away from the windows or pivotally mounted within the casing. The slit may be of variable width being formed of a fixed plate 29 and a plate 30 pressed away from the plate 29 by a spring 31 engaging a fixed rivet 32 but moved towards the plate 29 by a ring 33 rotatable about the axis of the screen and having a cam surface 34 engaging projections 35 on the plate 30.
