Abstract

Refractory articles, e.g. brazing fixtures or parts used in handling molten metals, are formed by mixing silicon carbide with silicon or a silicon alloy and water, ageing the mixture, if a dense article is required, by allowing it to stand for several days, vibrating the mixture and then transferring it to a wet mould which is vibrated, drying the mixture in the mould, and then firing the cast shape either in or out of the mould in a non-oxidizing atmosphere containing nitrogenous or carbonaceous constituents depending on whether it is desired to form a silicon nitride or carbide bond. During filling of the mould, the container for the mixture, a filling shoot, and the mould may be placed on a vibrating table or a vibrating feeder may be used. The mould may be made of plaster, graphite, sand and walnut shells. The mixture may contain silicon carbide, ferromanganese silicon, silicon, bentonite, lithium citrate (a deflocculating agent), and dextrine (a temporary binder and deflocculating agent).ALSO:Refractory articles, e.g., brazing fixtures or parts used in handling molten metals, are formed by mixing silicon carbide with silicon or a silicon alloy and water, ageing the mixture, if a dense article is required, by allowing it to stand for several days, vibrating the mixture and then transferring it to a wet mould which is vibrated, drying the mixture in the mould, and then firing the cast shape either in or out of the mould in a non-oxidizing atmosphere containing nitrogeneous or carbonaceous constituents depending on whether it is desired to form a silicon nitride or carbide bond.
