Abstract

785,864. Internal shoe-drum brakes. ROCKWELL SPRING & AXLE CO. Feb. 9, 1956 [Feb. 15, 1955], No. 4059/56. Class 103 (1). A brake mechanism of the type wherein a pair of shoes are engaged with a drum by the action of an actuator located outside the backing plate 22 and operating a wedge member 101 which acts through rollers 102 to spread apart the shoe ends is characterized in that the support or backing plate 22, the boss 34 forming a chamber accommodating the wedge member 101 and the boss 32 which forms an anchorage for the unactuated shoe ends are formed as a unitary structure. The wedge member 101 is guided by slots 112 in the ends of inserts 108 which fit into blind bores in the pistons 97. Adjustment mechanism for the shoe anchorage abutments comprises, as shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 4, hexagonal adjusting rods 36 rotating worms 46 meshing with worm gears 62 so as to advance or retard the respective anchor bolt 70.
