A two-stage centrifugal pump comprises a double-inlet impeller having shrouded or unshrouded blades a, b projecting from both sides of a central disc c and a ring p having guide vanes p<SP>1</SP>, p<SP>2</SP> on its opposite sides around the impeller for the deliveries of the first and second stages. Liquid drawn in through an inlet e is discharged by the blades a through the guide vanes p<SP>1</SP> and ports q to the inlet h of the second stage. The blades b discharge the liquid through the guide vanes p<SP>2</SP> to a passage i of concentric or volute form, which leads to the delivery branch j. The Provisional Specification describes a self-priming embodiment in which the second stage discharges to a reservoir and air separator formed by the upper part of the pump casing. A by-pass connects the reservoir with the inlet to the second stage. On starting with the pump initially flooded, the liquid is recirculated from the reservoir to the inlet of the second stage and draws air from the blades of the first stage as it passes the peripheral gap around the impeller, thereby priming the pump. On completion of priming, the recirculation through the by-pass ceases.
