785,097. Pneumatic tyres. PIRELLI SOC. PER AZIONI. Nov. 3, 1955 [Nov. 11, 1954], No. 31470/55. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre for use on both hard and soft surfaces comprises a substantially flat main tread 1, extending not less than two-thirds the maximum carcase width C, from the side edges of which, radially inset from its outer roadcontacting surface, laterally project auxiliary circumferential tread elements 3 which are brought into load-sharing ground contact only on soft ground into which the main tread penetrates, the elements 3 each having a radially outer surface which slopes radially inwardly and axially outwardly from the main tread at such an angle that in the flattened road-contacting region of the tread the surface becomes substantially parallel with the axial direction. The elements 3 may be either continuous or discontinuous circumferentially of the tyre, and their radially outer surfaces may subtend an obtuse angle α, within the range 91 to 140 degrees, with the side surface of the main trend 1. The degree of radial inset of the elements is such that on normal hard road surfaces, the surface of the main tread 1 only, even when the tread 1 is completely worn, comes into road contact.
