Abstract

784,438. Change-speed gearing. AUTO TRANSMISSIONS, Ltd. April 16, 1956 [May 9, 1955], No. 13311/55. Class 80 (2). Epicyclic three - speed and reverse gearing comprises two intermediate shafts a, b adapted to be connected separately or simultaneously to an engine or other power source through a pair of magnetic-powder clutches (Fig. 1a, not shown), with shaft a surrounding shaft b, sun pinions i, j on shafts a, b, a toothed annulus o on an output shaft p and planet pinions n meshing with sun i and annulus o and with planet pinions m meshing with sun j, shaft a being provided with a friction brake h while the planet carrier k, freely mounted on shaft a, is provided with a one-way roller brake q and with a positive stop pawl r slidable into engagement with teeth s on the carrier. For first speed, shaft b is driven, reverse rotation of the carrier being prevented by the one-way brake q. For second speed, shaft b is driven and brake h engaged. For direct drive, both shafts a, b are driven. For reverse, shaft a is driven and stop pawl r is engaged with teeth s. Shaft p may drive a final driven shaft 12 through an epicyclic overdrive gear comprising a planet carrier 8 on shaft p, toothed annulus 11 on shaft 12, a one-way clutch 13 between shafts p, 12, and a loose sun 5 adapted to be braked or to be connected to annulus 11 by a slidable friction member 6.
