Abstract

933,010. Variable-speed epicyclic gear. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. S. A. July 12, 1961 [July 19, 1960], No. 25282/61. Class 80 (2). An hydromechanical epicyclic transmission giving three forward speeds and reverse comprises three concentric output shafts 3, 5, 8 carrying sun-wheels 11, 12, 13 meshing with triple planet pinions 16, 17, 18 on a carrier 19, the shafts 5, 8 being connected to the turbine 6 of an hydraulic torque converter 2 through a one-way clutch 7 and friction clutch 9 respectively. A lock-up clutch 4 is provided in addition to holding brakes 20, 22 for the planet carrier 19 and shaft 8 respectively. For first gear, brake 20 is engaged to lock planet carrier 19, with clutches 4, 9 and brake 22 disengaged, drive then being transmitted from the input shaft 1, through torque converter 2, one-way clutch 7, shaft 5, and gears 12, 17 and 18, 13 to shaft 3. For second gear, clutch 9 is engaged, drive then being through the torque converter, shaft 8, and gears 11, 16 and 18, 13. Third gear is obtained by engaging clutch 4 for direct drive. For reverse, brake 22 is engaged to lock shaft 8 and sun-wheel 11, with clutches 4, 9 and brake 20 disengaged, drive then passing through the torque converter, one-way clutch 7, shaft 5, and gears 12, 17 and 18, 13, carrier 19 being free to rotate.
