Abstract

784,411. Transformers. SOUTH WALES SWITCHGEAR, Ltd. Oct. 14, 1955 [Nov. 4, 1954], No. 31986/54. Class 38 (2). A multi-layer electric coil comprises a number of layers of wire 1 individually separated by paper insulation 3, insulated spacer strips 4 being placed between adjacent layers so as to raise one layer from another, thereby forming ducts 5 at the sides of the strips 4 into which ducts an impregnating medium such as resin, plastic or varnish, can flow. The spacer strips are angularly spaced from one another in spiral form, two spirals being provided, the first spiral beginning with a strip 4a which is placed between an insulating former 2, when used, and the first layer and ending with a strip 4c placed between the two outermost layers at a point about half-way around the circumference of the coil from the strip 4a, the second spiral extending over the other half of the coil circumference and beginning with the strip 4d placed between the first and second layers and ending with the strip 4 between the penultimate layer and the one preceding it. Thus the radial thickness of the coil is equal to the aggregate radial thickness of the several layers 1 plus the thickness of one spacer strip 4. When no former 2 is used the strips 4a and 4d of the two spirals are moved out by one layer and two layers respectively. The ends of the paper insulation 3 are wrapped around the spacers 4 as at 6 (Fig. 2).
