Abstract

Ester amides of the formula R1-CO-N(R)-CH2CH2-OOC-R1 and <FORM:0784058/IV (a)/1> wherein R is a hydrocarbon radical (e.g. an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical), R1 is a saturated (C1-C4) aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R2 is an unpolymerizable hydrocarbon radical (e.g. an alkylene, cycloalkylene or arylene radical), are prepared by reacting a substituted ethyleneimine <FORM:0784058/IV (a)/2> wherein X represents a hydrocarbon radical and Y is hydrogen or <FORM:0784058/IV (a)/3> with an anhydride of a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 2 to 5 C. Specified anhydrides are those of acetic, propionic, butyric and valeric acids, or mixed anhydrides thereof. The reaction is preferably conducted at a temperature between -20 DEG C. and 220 DEG C. in an inert solvent. The examples describe the preparation of N-butyl-O : N-diacetyl ethanolamine, N - cyclohexyl O : N - diacetyl ethanolamine and N : N1-diacetyl-N : N1-di - (b - acetoxyethyl) - hexamethylene diamine.
