Abstract

One layer of an infra-red transmitting optical filter is formed by the thermal evaporation on to a carrier such as glass or a plastic polymeric material of a rare earth metal oxalate, zinc oxide, cadmium oxide, or one of the sulphides, selenides or tellurides of cadmium, zinc, or inerany, preferably in the atmosphere of a protective gas such as hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen selenide or hydrogen telluride.
