Abstract

783,433. Gripping devices for handling loads. WELDING INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 9, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 29279/54. Class 78 (4). A member 12a depending from the beam 1 carrying the arms 2 of a device for gripping a row of bricks 13 or similar articles divides the row of bricks so as to reduce the maximum bending moment tending to break up the row. As illustrated the member 12a comprises a suitably shaped flat plate pivoted to the beam 1 and carrying angle irons 14 which engage the tops of the bricks 13a to position the gripping shoes 4a coaxially. The gripping device may be locked in its open position by engagement of a pin 15a on an arm 15 pivoted to one of the gripping arms 2 with an arcuate surface on a stop 16 carried by the beam 1. The invention may be applied to gripping devices adapted to lift more than one row of articles simultaneously, and more than one plate 12a may be used in each row.
