Abstract
A monomer of a polymethacrylate is obtained by heating the polymer, preferably in small pieces, to a temperature which will cause depolymerization by heating in a bath of molten metal at a temperature of 450 DEG to 500 DEG C., said metal having its boiling-point sufficiently above the temperature of the bath to ensure that there is no formation or very little formation of the vapour of the metal. Suitable metals for the bath are molten lead, bismuth, cadmium, tin, rubidium, selenium, tellurium, thallium, and zinc or alloys of these metals with each other or with metals such as aluminium, antimony and magnesium. Specification 783,074, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.ALSO:A monomer of a polymethacrylate is obtained by heating the polymer, e.g. methyl polymethacrylate, in a bath of molten metal at a temperature of 450 DEG to 500 DEG C., the liquid metal having its boiling point sufficiently above the temperature of the bath to ensure that there is no, or very little, formation of the vapour of the metal at the temperature of the bath. Baths of molten lead, bismuth, cadmium, tin, rubidium, selenium, tellurium, thallium, zinc, sodium or of alloys of these may be used. Preferably the polymethacrylate is used in the form of small pieces. The apparatus in which the process is carried out forms the subject-matter of Specification 783,074.
