Abstract

781,986. Reinforced plastic sheet material; strengthening edges. WALKER, D. W. R. Aug. 18, 1955 [Oct. 9, 1954], No. 29144/54. Classes 42 (1) and 140. A method of reinforcing an article of flexible thermoplastic sheet material at points of stress concentration where attachments are made which pass through the material, comprises the application of textile material on one or both sides of the sheet in the region of the attachment, the sheet being partly fused into the textile material, leaving the outer surface of the textile material substantially free of plastic. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a tarpaulin 1 is made of a flexible sheet plastic, such as polythene, and around its edge is folded a strip of hessian 2. Heat and pressure are then applied until the plastic fuses partly into the material of the hessian on each side. Brass eyelets are applied through holes punched in the composite material. The eyelets comprise a main body 3 and a closing disc 4 into which the shank of the main body is expanded. Other attachments such as hooks or handles may be riveted through the reinforced parts of the plastic in similar manner. Canvas, linen, cotton or fabrics made of synthetic fibres may be used in place of the hessian. The entire tarpaulin may be made up of two or more thicknesses of flexible plastic instead of one. The two or more layers are treated as one and become welded together where the reinforcement is applied. The sheet material of the invention may be used for tents, vehicle hoods, portable water tanks, bags or garments.
