Abstract

<PICT:0780748/III/1> <PICT:0780748/III/2> Apparatus for making emulsions, comprising two end grinding discs having a rotary movement relative to each other includes one or more additional, freely-rotatable, grinding discs which are disposed between the end grinding discs so as to form an additional grinding gap or gaps. In the form shown, freely-rotatable discs 16 are mounted loosely and concentrically between a rotor disc 19 and a stator disc 17 which are pressed towards each other by means of a spring 15. The stator disc is axially adjustable by rotating the rotor shaft 1. The discs 16 are provided with grooves 23, 25, Fig. 2. Material fed to the apparatus may be pre-comminuted by incorporating a dispersing device. The latter may be formed by blades 20 provided on the rotor 2 which coact with blades 21 provided on the stator 4. The latter is also provided with teeth 22 to keep the discs 16 in a concentric position. The discs 17, 19 may be rotated in opposite directions. The grinding discs may be tapered, convex, squared or of other suitable profile and may have their grinding surfaces roughened. The apparatus may be portable, as shown, or fixed and may be horizontal or inclined. The apparatus is provided with classifying sieves disposed preferably below and around the rotor. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the freely rotatable grinding discs are provided with interlocking tongues and grooves to centre the discs in relation to the axis of rotation. The end grinding discs may be connected electrically. In modifications, Figs. 3 to 5 (not shown), the grinding discs are in the form of truncated cones and the intermediate discs may be tapered to a point at the inlet side. In one of these modifications, Fig. 3, the material is continuously discharged by means of an entraining mechanism attached to the rotor.
