780,598. Rotary engines and pumps. INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT CO., ESTABLISHMENT. Nov. 15, 1955 [Nov. 15, 1954], No. 33077/54. Class 110 (2). A rotary machine of the axially-sliding abutment type, Fig. 1, comprises a stationary casing 20, a distributing member 33 and a rotary member adapted to reciprocate the spring- loaded abutment 22 which may be composed of a single solid member or parallel plates provided, if desired, with resilient packing (see Figs. 9 and 10, not shown). In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the outlet conduit is disposed about the inlet conduit and is provided with a tapping communicating with the underside of the piston. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the abutment co-operates with opposed helicoidal surfaces whereby the spring 32 of Fig. 1 is dispensed with, additional inlet and outlet means being provided in the bottom portion, if so desired, as is the case in Fig. 5 (not shown), which incorporates two abutments. A pump as described above may be coupled to a motor through suitable transmission means to provide a variable speed drive (see Fig. 7, not shown). Again, two such pumps MP, MP1, Fig. 8, may be incorporated in the drive between a motor M and a propeller, dynamo or pair of wheels 72, a control valve 68<SP>1</SP>, hydraulic or pneumatic accumulators 73 and a check valve 74 being incorporated in the circuit as shown. The pump MP1 may constitute a gear pump or any other type of pump.
