Abstract

780,114. Shaft seals. VICTOR MANUFACTURING & GASKET CO. Sept. 14, 1955, No. 26330/55. Class 122 (5). A split seal for a rotating shaft comprises two semi-annular parts each consisting of a U- section sealing member of elastic material adapted to engage a flange 15 on the shaft housing, having a shaft sealing flexible lip 19 on its inner periphery, and reinforced by two telescoped L-section metallic members 4, 5 and 6, 7 embedded in the sealing member and having aligned holes 8 through their telescoped flanges 4, 6 filled with slugs 20 of the elastic material. The bottom 12 of the groove 14 is provided with a central rib 13 that is compressed between the flange 15 and the metallic members when the seal is installed as in Fig. 4 and the slugs 20 allow resilient axial movement between the two metallic members. The sealing lip, which may be coated with fabric, is stiffened by walls 26 adjacent the diametrical joints.
