Abstract

1500736 Infiltrated sintered ferrous bodies NIPPON PISTON RING CO Ltd 20 Feb 1975 [21 Feb 1974] 7140/75 HeadingC7D Sintered ferrous alloys suitable for use as valve seats are made by mixing Fe powder with Mo and/ or W, C and optionally at least one of Ni, Mn, Cr and Cu, pressing and sintering the mixture to form a sintered product with a pearlitic structure which is then machined, infiltrated with Cu or a Cu base alloy and cooled to form a structure which is at least 10% martensitic and/or bainite. The powder mixture preferably contains 0À5-5 wt per cent Mo and/or W. Pressing and sintering are conventional e.g. at 4-6 t/sq cm and 1100-1200‹C and 50-85% of the interstitial volume of the sintered alloy is infiltrated with Cu or a Cu base alloy.
