Abstract
779,671. Sewing. FELTON, W. Nov. 14, 1955 [Dec. 7, 1954; July 15, 1955], Nos. 35323/54 and 20489/55. Class 112. A needle of the kind having a hook or notch closed by a gate, and particularly adapted for tufting, comprises a rod 20 having a hook or notch at one end thereof, and a tubular sheath 16 surrounding part of the length of the rod and having a pointed end 17, the rod being slidable between a position wherein the point projects beyond the hook or notch to act as a gate closing the latter and to permit the needle to penetrate material, and a position wherein the hook or notch projects from the sheath and yarn or thread can be introduced thereto. As shown, an offset hook 21 is formed from bent wire and is soldered or brazed to the rod, part of the wall of the sheath being cut away to form a channel 18 into which the hook may enter. Alternatively, the rod itself may be reduced at its end, as by swaging, and either bent over to form a hook or provided with an oblique notch serving the purpose of a hook.
