Abstract
Glycidyl polyether-resol reaction products which, when dissolved in the usual organic solvents and applied to surfaces as coatings, bake hard when heated to 140-230 DEG C. in 5 minutes to 3 hours, are obtained by heating at 80-170 DEG C. for up to 4 hours without gelation a mixture of a glycidyl polyether, obtained by heating epichlorhydrin and a dihydric phenol in presence of alkali, and an etherified resol derived from mono- or polyhydric phenols and having more than two -OH groups per molecule, th polyether and resol being present in weight ratios between 60/40 to 90/10 . The reaction may be carried out with the reactants in the molten condition but preferably they are dissolved in solvents, e.g. cellosolve acetatetoluene or diacetone alcohol-xylene mixtures; acid catalysts may be present, e.g. phosphoric acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, benzene disulphonic acid, oxalic acid. In examples a glycidyl polyether and a resol are dissolved in a mixture of the ethyl ether of ethylene glycol acetate and toluene and the mixture heated to 120 DEG C. for 3 hours. The resols may be prepared as follows: (1) a mixture of 100 parts 30 per cent formaldehyde, 10 parts 25 per cent ammonia and 100 parts phenol was heated at 65-70 DEG C. for one hour; the resin layer was separated and dehydrated under vacuum at 75 DEG C. and then heated with an equal volume of butanol for 3 hours at 120 DEG C. (3) 334 Gs. 2.2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenol) propane, 584 gs. 39 per cent formaldehyde and 354 gs. 33 per cent NaOH solution were heated at 40 DEG C. After standing for 6 days 260 gs. of 53 per cent sulphuric acid were added and, on standing, the resin layer was seaparated, washed, neutralized and dried in vacuo. The product obtained was dissolved in butanol, dehydrated by distilling off azeotropically a mixture of water and butanol adding more butanol and continuing the distillation until the temperature reached 120 DEG C.
