Abstract

778,426. Resilient mountings. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. March 2, 1956 [March 10, 1955], No. 7083/55. Class 108(3). An anti-vibration mounting comprises an elongated channel member 6, a wedge-shaped inner member 7, and resilient material 8, located between the opposed faces of the members 6, 7, so that the member 7 is movable towards the base of the member 6 against combined compression and shear of the material 8, the members 6, 7, also being movable relatively in a direction longitudinally of the member 6 against shear stress in the material 8. As shown, the material 8 is in the form of two pairs 8, 9, of rubber blocks, the pair 8 operating in shear and the pair 9 operating in combined compression and shear under vertical movement of the member 7. Extreme downward deflection is limited by a pad 10. The walls of the member 6 may be tapered in a longitudinal direction so that the blocks 8 and 9 are stressed in combined compression and shear on relative horizontal movement of the members 6, 7. In a further modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the material 8 is moulded in one continuous piece, between both opposing side faces and the opposing end faces of the members 6, 7. A hole is bored in the material 8 at an intermediate point in the length of each limb of the channel defined by the material 8. The diameter of this hole is slightly less than the total width of the material between the opposed faces of the members 6, 7, and it has the effect of dividing the material 8 into two independently acting blocks like the blocks 8 and 9 in Fig. 2. A cavity is cut away in the material at the base of the channel to provide a buffering pad equivalent to the pad 10 of Fig. 2.
