Abstract
777,483. Combination locks. RILEY & SONS, Ltd., J. & M. March 21, 1956 [March 24, 1955], No. 27597/54. Class 44. A combination lock comprises a housing for a spring-loaded shoe on which rests a sliding bolt formed with two upstanding projections adapted to enter slots in two rotary discs to enable the bolt to be moved to release the shoe against the action of its spring for the insertion or withdrawal of a catch into or from the lock, the discs being rotated by knobs calibrated on their outer faces, one of such calibrations on each knob corresponding with the slot in it disc to allow the catch to be inserted or withdrawn when the slots are in line with the projections on the bolt. As shown, a housing A is mounted on a base-plate B for attachment to one of the parts to be locked by a projection b. A shoe C, loaded by a spring C<SP>1</SP> is located behind the housing A, a part c<SP>1</SP> engaging a recess a and a part c supporting an end d of a slidable bolt D located on the other side of the housing A and engaging a recess a<SP>1</SP> therein. The bolt is movable by finger pressure against the spring C<SP>1</SP> when projections d<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>2</SP> on the bolt engage slots b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP> of discs B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>, as the latter are rotated by knobs b4, b<SP>5</SP> on a coverplate B<SP>2</SP> to bring the slots into register with the projections. This position of the bolt permits a catch E attached to the other part to be locked, to be entered in the recess a of the housing and an upturned end e to engage the housing, such that upon release of the bolt D, the catch is trapped by the part C <SP>1</SP> of the shoe C, the knobs b<SP>4</SP> and b<SP>5</SP> hereafter being rotated to misalign the slots b and projections d', d<SP>2</SP>. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the catch fication, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown, the catch is in the form of a notched plate B, the notch being engaged by a modified end of the shoe C and the peg also engaging an aperture in the bolt D. The lock is applicable to zip fasteners and containers such as boxes and trunks.
