776,743. Combined disc and drum brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1953 [Dec. 5, 1952], No. 30964/53. Class 103 (1). A brake combining the characteristics of both the disc and internal shoe-drum types comprises a drum 26 secured to, and rotatable with, an axle 36, and enclosing shoes 14 and 16 arranged side by side and carrying friction members 44 at their outer radial faces, the shoe 16, which has a flange 46 extending over shoe 14, carrying friction lining 48 on its axially extending face. When pressure is applied to an actuator cylinder 38, pistons 40 acting through rods 42 cause simultaneous opposite relative circumferential movement of the shoes 14 and 16 so that they are spread apart by the action of ball ramp combinations 50 into engagement with the sides of the drum. The circumferential drag on the shoes then causes them to pivot about one or other end pivots 18 or 20 so that the friction material lined flange 46 engages the axial face of the drum. Springs 56 and 58 act to retract axially and radially. Automatic adjustment means 66 may be fitted. Specification 774,489, [Group XXV], divisional on this Specification has different claims for the same construction. Specification 776,744 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 698,726.
