Abstract
1,090,731. Drum brake. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. May 5, 1964 [Feb. 5, 1963], No. 4668/63. Heading F2E. An internal shoe drum brake has one end of one shoe bearing against a yieldable abutment which supports the shoe against circumferential displacement by contact of the brake shoe with the drum until a predetermined torque is reached resulting in yielding of the abutment whereby further increase of brake torque is prevented even though the brake actuating force may increase, stop means being provided for limiting the spread of the brake shoe by the shoe expanding means. In the yieldable abutment shown in Fig. 3 a prestressed spring 23 holds the parts 20, 26, 29 against rightward movement during normal braking, but when the force exerted by shoe 3 becomes excessive the spring yields. The members 26, 28, 29 are free to move leftwards to provide a duo-servo action of the shoes 2, 3 when the vehicle fitted with the brakes is moving in reverse. The actuator, Fig. 1, has a collar 16 on the piston which operates the shoe 3, the collar abutting the cylinder portion 15 when the abutment at the other end of the shoe yields. The yieldable abutment is provided with an automatic wear adjuster 30, 31, 32 which operates, when required, on brake application during reverse movement of the vehicle. In another embodiment the adjuster for shoe 3 is provided on the actuator (Figs. 4 and 6, not shown). An adjuster of the type disclosed in Specification 992,873 is provided for the other shoe (70, 71, 72, Fig. 4, not shown).
