Class 130 A method for the manufacture of mouthpiece cigarettes includes the steps of moving lengths of tobacco or cigarette rod lengthwise on successive conveyer belts 2, 2a, Fig. 1, and forming a gap between successive lengths by accelerating one length from the following length in passing from one conveyer 2 to another 2a, inserting at least one filter body 6 into said gaps, applying a uniting wrapper or band around said filter body or bodies to form a composite rod, and then cutting said rod at predetermined places to form individual cigarettes each provided at one end with a filter mouthpiece consisting of two filter bodies. In Figs. 1 and 2 composite mouthpiece sections, consisting of two single-length filters 7a, 7b, and a doublelength filter 6, are inserted from a magazine 4 into gaps in a tobacco rod cut into individual lengths by a cutter wheel 3, the resulting composite rod being wrapped in a cigarette paper and cut by a cutter 10 at the mid-points of the tobacco sections and filter sections to produce cigarettes having a double-filter mouthpiece. The filter 6 is preferably of a different type to the filters 7a, 7b. In a modification the tobacco sections are replaced by sections of cigarette rod which are connected with the filters by individual uniting bands. In Fig. 3 filters 16 are inserted between lengths of cigarette rod 12 'and united together by bands 17 to form a composite rod which is cut by a cutter 19 at the mid points of the filter sections. The resulting sections, consisting of a double-length cigarette 12, Fig. 5, with a filter section 16a, 16b, at each end, are spaced apart to form gaps in which a second filter 24, Fig. 6, is inserted and united by uniting bands 26, the resulting composite rod being cut by a cutter 27 at the mid-points of the cigarette lengths 12 and filters 24 to produce cigarettes having a mouthpiece consisting of a filter 16a and a portion of the filter 24. Preferably the diameter of the filters is less than that of the cigarette lengths so that the uniting bands, which compress the ends of the cigarette slightly, do not form a portion of diameter greater than that of the cigarette lengths. In Fig. 7 a composite cigarette rod consisting of filters 16<SP>1</SP> connected to single-length cigarettes 12<SP>1</SP> by uniting bands 26<SP>1</SP> is cut at the points S adjacent each filter to produce cigarettes having double-filter mouthpieces of which one of the filters comprises a short portion 16<SP>11</SP> of cigarette rod.
